Dramatic Male

I was working on proportions and balance with this drawing. I found a picture from a magazine of a perfume ad, and drew from it.

Family Time

Do you ever find a pile of CDs that have died, been scratched, bitten, etc, that will no longer work? Well I have a solution.
My Dad has a massive cd collection, and with that collection there are close to 50 CDs that no longer work. I come from those families that don't really like to throw things out, so i went looking (to pinterest obviously) for a craft for these unwanted CDs.

  • You can microwave them (only 7 sec or something might blow up or break into flames... trust me. It will be the scariest 7 seconds of your life) and get this crackly texture.
  • You can cook them in an oven, so they get hot and melty (do NOT put CDs directly on oven shelf or in pan, what if it gets too hot and melts to the wire/pan. what then genius? what are you supposed to say to mom? Tin foil is your friend) so you can mold and stretch the plastic. (NOT with bare hands)
  • You can also use them like a piece of scratchboard and scratch a picture into them.

So I have always been interested in clocks, it can say a lot about your family. Whether you must be on time, or not, or you don't even own a clock (you all know who you are). Well my family is rather slack about being on time. We would much rather focus on being with each other or having a good time where we are than rush off. Besides the more we try to be punctual, the less it works sometimes.

Anyway, I wanted to make a clock that would represent my family. So I thought of 5 different characteristics that really describe my family.
  1. Our family motto/verse is Isaiah 40:31, which is represented by the eagle (12 o'clock)
  2. Not only has everyone in my family been to college, my grandmothers were both teachers, so education is quite important to us. (9 o'clock)
  3. Everyone in my family (including extensive) is or was a musician (6 o'clock)
  4. Innovation and originality is important (3 o'clock)
  5. most of all, humor which is represented by the greatest of comedians, Bill Cosby. PS. that particular record was my brother and my first introduction to Bill Cosby.
Do besides all that greatness, the clock does work, but is slow as molasses. Kind of like us, it enjoys itself as it passes through time and memory. That is why this piece is appropriately called Family Time.

The Teacher and the Apprentice

My neighbor (about 8 ish) loves to draw, recently I have been giving him drawing lessons. I had an idea while I was doodle the other day. Wouldn't a picture depicting the difference between the teacher and the student be interesting. So that is the main theme behind this picture. I also wanted to work on shading with graphite (this was both powder and pencil).

PS.

This is also the moment to mention,
don't use graphite powder over carpet floors.
It doesn't end nicely.

Beauty in the Rain

I decided I should practice some scratchboard, so I found a nice black and white picture of my friend and began.
Scratchboard is a difficult medium due to the backwards shading. Instead of adding black, in this case, you are getting ride of black (which you really can't put back). Which is all fun and games until you have to do eyelashes.

Drawing from Observation

An important technique an artist always can use some work in is drawing from observation.

In this one, the hand was drawn from observation, and the flower pod was fantasized.

An Orphan's Dream

The memory project is a project that has talented artists in the US create portraits of children in third world countries. My school did one such project. We were given a portrait of a child and asked to recreate it and send it back to the children so they could hang it on the wall and have something they could call their own. This was done with pastels. Enjoy.

Colored People Stop Motion

Stop motion. An underrated way to create something epic in half a lifetime, that ends up being about a minute long. If you have ever done a stop motion, you understand what I mean. However, this particular project did not take an entire lifetime, but it was close.

You also learn how much of a perfectionist you are when you create a stop motion. The way a stop motion is created (for those of you in the dark) is by taking multiple pictures and putting them together in order to create a moving object. So you move and object about a centimeter, and take a picture, move another centimeter and take a picture, etc. And put it together and you can make a stuffed animal take a step. (with 50-100 pictures)

Anyway, this is a stop motion of crayons. I am a crayon enthusiast/snob. So I put crayons to the song Colored People by DC Talk. The main focus of the song is to show the beauty of diverse skin tones. I chose to use crayons for the simple message they would be able to represent.
Simple, yet powerful.

Create Yourself Stickers

My computer graphics class started a unit on sticker bombing. Sticker bombing is when you take an object and completely cover it with stickers. Many artists are using sticker bombing as an alternative to graffiti.

I created a theme for my stickers called Create Yourself. These are thematic stickers that had things  people might use in order to make themselves unique. Such as music, artistic talent, the way they speak and such.

Then I took the stickers I made and sticker

bombed a hat I had in my bedroom. This is another way to create yourself, by wearing interesting clothing that no one else has. To the left is my sticker sheet, and below are the pictures of the hat.

Pyramid Art Show

My high school was having a pyramid art show and asked my computer graphics class to create a poster for it. A pyramid art show shows works of art from elementary school to high school.

I felt the best way to visually represent a pyramid art show, would be to involve a pyramid/pyramid shape. This shape is also very symbolic of what happens in art classes over the years. In elementary school, everyone does art, its required. In middle school it is one of few electives available. And in high school, only those who truly enjoy art will choose to take art amidst the many classes available.

In the paint buckets are the names of the schools participating. Once the creativity put in by those schools goes through the funnel, the artistic swirls with the location, date and such come out.

Metro Safety Info graphic

With the new silver line opening, my marketing class was asked to create some advertising for metro safety. And in computer graphics, we were starting a unit on info graphics. So I decided to hit two birds with one stone and combine the project.

Info graphics are normally seen as long pictures, with distinctive style of design. Their purpose is to make learning easier by depicting things with pictures. Like graphs and pie charts for example. Or how much foam is in a latte compared to an expresso, etc.

I wanted a lot of information in this presentation, so I created a video and posted it on youtube. This video was designed for a person that had never ridden the metro before and has some good tips for how to "survive" on the metro. I also created a flyer (left) to go along with the video. The QR code takes you to the video on youtube (below). Enjoy.

Draw Me In

This is my first try at rotoscoping. It began as an inspiration from the book Harold and the Purple Crayon. This was one of my favorite books as a child, so I decided to pay it tribute. I have always loved the way the pencil or crayon was the one creating, as if the utensil used in the art form is the place creativity comes from. This is called Draw Me In.

Precision

This was inspired after I had my portfolio reviewed by a teacher at VCU. I had shown him a picture (the one this pastel is based off of) and he said it would be so impressive if I actually drew it. So, I did. Enjoy.

Inside the Box v. Outside the Box

So for this quarter in art class, we were given the task of creating a series. So I created a series focusing on the contrasting environments of inside the box v. outside the box. PS. These should be viewed from bottom to top.

This scene represents living outside the box. It is like you have gone beyond the outer limits where anything is possible.

This scene is the mid ground. Where you are neither free, nor confined. In this environment, people tend to fall back into their original box. In the background there is a rocket that connects with the picture above.

This is the first stage. Inside the box. This is constrainment and containment. The boxes with darker windows are those unhappy in their box. The boxes with lighter windows are the people that are happy in their. In the background, in the sky, there are two feet belonging to the man in the picture above.

I entered these pieces into the Junior and Senior art show at my high school, I was awarded the Principal's Choice Award.

Mini-Me

In computer graphics, we started a new unit called, Caricatures. This is when you take a normal looking person and accentuate some of their features to create a cartoon character. These cartoon characters can look very attractive, very unattractive and very silly. Being a girl, I figured the best way to go would be attractive with some amounts of realism. I started by looking at multiple caricatures, some I liked, some I didn't; and compared them. I noticed some features can not be exaggerated at the same time if you want to attractive, or female. Some of them being, large forehead and large teeth; large ears in general are not very pretty on a lady, and so forth. So here are my results.
